Grassfed Stays Fresh Longer

Drawn from Nigel Scollan study, Control of beef meat quality, from the Annual Report and Accounts 2001, Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research (IGER, January 2002). Abstract available at http://www.iger.bbsrc.ac.uk/igerweb/AnnRep2001/sciadv01.htm#Control. Also described at EatWild.com: http://www.eatwild.com/news.html, both accessed 3/24/03.

"Recent results have revealed a major beneficial effect on product shelf life when animals are fed on grass, compared with concentrates [grain-based feeds]. We believe that this is related to the much higher content of antioxidants [i.e., alpha tocopherol, or Vitamin E] in grass" (Scollan 2002).

The photagraph below illustrates the appearance of grainfed ("concentrate") and grassfed (forage) beef steaks kept in a refrigerator for 2 weeks in supermarket-type packaging, in the Scollan study.
